Notes on the Gothic Weather Page

The data collection location is at the north end of Gothic on level ground (remembering that most of Gothic townsite tilts to the south) in an area protected from most wind.

Precipitation data is collected for a day from sunset to sunset, so if snow or rain starts after sunset on a Monday it is recorded as precipitation for Tuesday. Temperatures are from approximately midnight to midnight.

The 'snow depth' amount in the table is the depth of the snow at sunset on that date.

The weather data summaries on this web page are selected items from over 30 years worth of data from the Gothic area. There is too much information to put on line but more specific information may be made available by contacting RMBL.  We will be adding more data as time allows.

The snowfall amounts are measured on a 12 hour board, meaning that twice every 24 hours the snowfall amount is measured and the board is cleared. Data also exists for a 24 hour board but this is not used for this web page.

Cloud cover is as follows: Completely clear (or cloudless)-  Not a cloud to be seen; Clear- a few scattered clouds only; partly cloudy- about 25- 50% cloud cover; partly/mostly cloudy- about  50% cloud cover; mostly cloudy- about 60-90% cloudy cover; cloudy- all cloudy sky but thin and high; overcast- high but thick cloud cover; obscured- thick and low cloud cover with limited if any visibility.

The analysis of snow conditions and avalanche hazard is given as to be a help or as a point of interest, but these are general observations. One should always use caution based on your own observation and testing to evaluate snow conditions.

Arrival information on animals in spring are based on when the animals arrive or emerge here and stay, not just the first time it passes through. An early visitor could too easily be seen one year and missed the next. First flowering of plants are from the same populations each year and may not represent the actual first flowering of that plant in this area.
